δυνάμει τοῦ θεοῦ. αἱ τοίνυν οὐσίαι ὑλικαί. ἀφʼ ὧν τὰ ἐπὶ μέρους γένη καὶ τὰ τούτων εἴδη γίνεται. ἄβυσσοι εἴρηνται· ἐπεὶ μόνον τὸ ὕδωρ οὐκ ἂν εἶπεν ἄβυσσον. καίτοι καὶ ὕδωρ ἄβυσσος ἢ ὕλη ἀλληγορεῖται.

power of God. Material substances, then, from which the particular genera and their species come into being, are called depths; since he would not have called water alone an abyss. And yet water too is allegorized as abyss, or matter.
