The Instructor 1.9.79

Bringing to one's senses (phrenōsis) is blame that puts sense into the mind (phrenes). He has not refrained from this manner of instruction either, but says through Jeremiah: “How long shall I cry out, and they will not listen? Behold, their ears are uncircumcised.” O blessed forbearance! And again through the same prophet: “All the nations are uncircumcised, but this people is uncircumcised in heart.” “For it is a disobedient people, sons,” he says, “in whom there is no faith.” Visitation (episkopē) is severe reprimand. He uses this kind in the Gospel: “Jerusalem, Jerusalem, you who kill the prophets and stone those sent to you.” The repetition of the name makes the reprimand strong. For how can one who knows God persecute the ministers of God? That is why he says: “Your house is left to you desolate; for I tell you, from now on you will not see me until you say, Blessed is he who comes in the name of the Lord.” For if you do not accept his love for humankind, you will know his power.
