If, then, I confess the Lord for the sake of an expected reward, moving my lips for witness to the Lord, I am an ordinary man, sounding the Lord without knowing him. For there is the people that loves with its lips, and there is another who gives up the body to be burned. “And if I give away all my possessions,” he says, not according to the principle of loving fellowship, but according to that of requital, either from the man benefited or from the Lord who has promised; “and if I have all faith, so as to move mountains,” and to cast off the passions that darken, but am not made faithful to the Lord through love, “I am nothing,” reckoned as of no account in comparison with the one who bears witness in the way of knowledge, counted among the multitude. “All the generations from Adam to this day have passed away; but those perfected in love according to the grace of God have the place of the godly, who will be made manifest at the visitation of the kingdom of Christ.”
