Miscellanies 4.21.132
Summary: God gave apostles, prophets, evangelists, shepherds, and teachers to build up the church toward the perfect man, Christ's fullness; we must strive for perfection in the flesh; the one Spirit distributes varied gifts to each.
Greek text · Stählin 2:306–307
English · Claude translation
These are the preliminary exercises of the knowing discipline. Since the Almighty God himself gave “some as apostles, some as prophets, some as evangelists, some as shepherds and teachers, for the equipping of the saints for the work of ministry, for the building up of the body of Christ, until we all attain to the unity of the faith and of the knowledge of the Son of God, to a perfect man, to the measure of the stature of the fullness of Christ,” we must hasten to become men in the way of knowledge, and to be perfected as far as possible while still remaining in the flesh, having practiced from perfect concord here to run together with the will of God toward the restoration of the truly perfect nobility and kinship, to the fullness of Christ perfectly completed through the equipping. We see now where, how, and when the divine apostle speaks of the perfect man and shows differences among the perfect. And again: “To each is given the manifestation of the Spirit for the common good. For to one is given through the Spirit a word of wisdom, to another a word of knowledge according to the same Spirit, to another faith in the same Spirit, to another gifts of healing in the same Spirit, to another workings of miracles, to another prophecy, to another discernment of spirits, to another kinds of tongues, to another interpretation of tongues; but all these the one and the same Spirit works, distributing to each individually as he wills.”
