Πῶς, φημί, κύριε, ἐγένοντο χείρονες, θεὸν ἐπεγνωκότες; Ὁ μὴ γινώσκων, φησί, θεὸν καὶ πονηρευόμενος ἔχει κόλασίν τινα τῆς πονηρίας αὐτοῦ, ὁ δὲ θεὸν ἐπιγνοὺς οὐκέτι ὀφείλει πονηρεύεσθαι, ἀλλʼ ἀγαθοποιεῖν.

“How, sir,” I said, “did they become worse, having come to know God?” “The one who does not know God,” he said, “and does evil has some punishment for his wickedness; but the one who has come to know God ought no longer to do evil, but to do good.
