Refutation of All Heresies 10.33.2

Authorship disputed: The work names no author. Book 1 was long printed among Origen's works as the Philosophumena; after books 4–10 were found in a manuscript from Mount Athos (published 1851), it was assigned to Hippolytus, the usual view today, though some scholars ascribe it to another Roman writer of the same circle. Books 2 and 3 are lost, and book 4 lacks its beginning.

Summary: The Word, the Father's firstborn, carried the Father's will and ideas and made the world at his command.

English · Claude translation

The Word was the cause of the things that came into being, bearing in himself the will of the one who begot him, not without experience of the Father's thought. For at the same time as coming forth from the one who begot him, having become his firstborn voice, he has in himself the forms conceived beforehand in the Father; whence, when the Father commanded the world to come into being, the Word accomplished it item by item, pleasing God.
