Refutation of All Heresies 4.14.20
Authorship disputed: The work names no author. Book 1 was long printed among Origen's works as the Philosophumena; after books 4–10 were found in a manuscript from Mount Athos (published 1851), it was assigned to Hippolytus, the usual view today, though some scholars ascribe it to another Roman writer of the same circle. Books 2 and 3 are lost, and book 4 lacks its beginning.
Summary: Others use different values and ad hoc rules, finding nothing sound.

Others do not use these customary numbers, but others: for example, they do not want … to have the root … units but …, and the letter … the root … units; and twisting in every direction they find nothing sound. When some compete a second time, they remove the first letter from each of the names; when a third time, two letters from each, and reckoning the rest they compare them.
