Authorship disputed: The work names no author. Book 1 was long printed among Origen's works as the Philosophumena; after books 4–10 were found in a manuscript from Mount Athos (published 1851), it was assigned to Hippolytus, the usual view today, though some scholars ascribe it to another Roman writer of the same circle. Books 2 and 3 are lost, and book 4 lacks its beginning.

Ἀληθῶς δέ, ὥσπερ λέγεται, κατὰ τὸν αὐτοῦ Ἡρακλέα δεῖ μιμησαμένους ἐκκαθᾶραι τὴν Αὐγείου κόπρον, μᾶλλον δὲ ἀμάραν, εἰς ἣν ἐμπεσόντες οἱ τούτου ἐχόμενοι οὐ πώποτε ἀποπλυθήσονται, ἀλλʼ οὐδὲ ἀνακύψαι δυνήσονται.

Truly, as the saying goes, we must imitate his own Heracles and clean out the dung of Augeas, or rather the ditch, into which those who hold to him have fallen and will never be washed clean, nor even be able to lift their heads.
