Authorship disputed: The work names no author. Book 1 was long printed among Origen's works as the Philosophumena; after books 4–10 were found in a manuscript from Mount Athos (published 1851), it was assigned to Hippolytus, the usual view today, though some scholars ascribe it to another Roman writer of the same circle. Books 2 and 3 are lost, and book 4 lacks its beginning.

Summary: They read "we have not seen his form" of the hidden Man in the body.

Τοῦτʼ ἐστί, φησί, τὸ εἰρημένον· φωνὴν μὲν αὐτοῦ ἠκούσαμεν, εἶδος δὲ αὐτοῦ οὐχ ἑωράκαμεν. Ἀποτεταμένου γάρ, φησίν, αὐτοῦ καὶ κεχαρακτηρισμένου ἀκούεται φωνή, τὸ δὲ εἶδος τὸ κατελθὸν ἄνωθεν ἀπὸ τοῦ ἀχαρακτηρίστου ὁποῖον ἐστὶν εἶδεν οὐδείς. Ἔστι δὲ ἐν τῷ πλάσματι τῷ χοϊκῷ, γινώσκει δὲ αὐτὸ οὐδείς.

English · Claude translation

This, he says, is what is said: "We have heard his voice, but we have not seen his form." For when he has been stretched out and stamped, he says, his voice is heard; but what the form is that came down from above from the unstamped, no one has seen. It is in the earthly mold, but no one knows it.
