Refutation of All Heresies 6.14.11

Authorship disputed: The work names no author. Book 1 was long printed among Origen's works as the Philosophumena; after books 4–10 were found in a manuscript from Mount Athos (published 1851), it was assigned to Hippolytus, the usual view today, though some scholars ascribe it to another Roman writer of the same circle. Books 2 and 3 are lost, and book 4 lacks its beginning.

Summary: The unborn child does not eat or breathe but is fed and receives spirit through the umbilical vessels.

English · Claude translation

For the infant being formed in paradise neither takes food by the mouth nor breathes through the nostrils; for since it lies in fluids, death would be at its feet if it breathed, for it would draw in the fluids and perish. But it is wholly enclosed in the so-called amniotic membrane; it is nourished through the navel, and through the artery along the spine, as I said, it receives the substance of the spirit.”
