Refutation of All Heresies 6.22.2

Authorship disputed: The work names no author. Book 1 was long printed among Origen's works as the Philosophumena; after books 4–10 were found in a manuscript from Mount Athos (published 1851), it was assigned to Hippolytus, the usual view today, though some scholars ascribe it to another Roman writer of the same circle. Books 2 and 3 are lost, and book 4 lacks its beginning.

Summary: Hippolytus will set out Pythagoras's teaching and then show how Valentinus applied it to Christ, the Father, and Silence.

English · Claude translation

So that we may follow the doctrines on which Valentinus has built, I will first set out now what Pythagoras of Samos teaches as philosophy, together with that silence of his celebrated among the Greeks; and then those things which Valentinus, taking them from Pythagoras and Plato, grandly ascribes to Christ and, before Christ, to the Father of all and to Silence, the consort of the Father.
