Refutation of All Heresies 6.32.5

Authorship disputed: The work names no author. Book 1 was long printed among Origen's works as the Philosophumena; after books 4–10 were found in a manuscript from Mount Athos (published 1851), it was assigned to Hippolytus, the usual view today, though some scholars ascribe it to another Roman writer of the same circle. Books 2 and 3 are lost, and book 4 lacks its beginning.

Summary: The Fruit healed Sophia's four passions but saw that, being eternal, they could not simply be destroyed.

English · Claude translation

The Fruit, then, having come outside the Pleroma and found her in the first four passions, fear, grief, perplexity, and supplication, corrected her passions; and in correcting them he saw that it was not good for them to be destroyed, since they were eternal and Sophia's own, nor for Sophia to remain in such passions, in fear and grief, entreaty, and perplexity.
