Refutation of All Heresies 6.37.3
Authorship disputed: The work names no author. Book 1 was long printed among Origen's works as the Philosophumena; after books 4–10 were found in a manuscript from Mount Athos (published 1851), it was assigned to Hippolytus, the usual view today, though some scholars ascribe it to another Roman writer of the same circle. Books 2 and 3 are lost, and book 4 lacks its beginning.
Summary: Plato's letter continues: the soul's restless inquiry about these things is the source of evils.
English · Claude translation
About the king and the things I spoke of there is nothing of that kind. But after this the soul seeks to learn what sort of things they are, looking to things akin to itself, none of which is adequate. This, O son of Dionysius and Doris, is the question which is the cause of all evils; or rather the anxiety about it that arises in the soul, which unless one removes, he will never truly attain the truth. But what is wonderful about it, [hear].
