Authorship disputed: The work names no author. Book 1 was long printed among Origen's works as the Philosophumena; after books 4–10 were found in a manuscript from Mount Athos (published 1851), it was assigned to Hippolytus, the usual view today, though some scholars ascribe it to another Roman writer of the same circle. Books 2 and 3 are lost, and book 4 lacks its beginning.

Summary: The world lasts until the whole third Sonship follows Jesus, is purified, and rises like the first.

Μέχρι δὲ ἐκείνου φησὶ συνεστηκέναι τὸν κόσμον οὕτως, μέχρις οὗ πᾶσα ἡ υἱότης ἡ καταλελειμμένη εἰς τὸ εὐεργετεῖν τὰς ψυχὰς ἐν ἀμορφίᾳ καὶ εὐεργετεῖσθαι διαμορφουμένη κατακολουθήσῃ τῷ Ἰησοῦ καὶ ἀναδράμῃ καὶ ἔλθῃ ἀποκαθαρισθεῖσα· καὶ γίνεται λεπτομερεστάτη, ὡς δύνασθαι διʼ αὐτῆς ἀναδραμεῖν ὥσπερ ἡ πρώτη. Πᾶσαν γὰρ ἔχει τὴν δύναμιν συνεστηριγμένην φυσικῶς τῷ φωτὶ τῷ λάμψαντι ἄνωθεν κάτω.

And he says the world holds together in this way until the whole Sonship that was left behind to benefit the souls in formlessness and to be benefited, being given form, follows Jesus and runs up and comes, purified; and it becomes most fine, so that it can run up by itself like the first.
