Authorship disputed: The work names no author. Book 1 was long printed among Origen's works as the Philosophumena; after books 4–10 were found in a manuscript from Mount Athos (published 1851), it was assigned to Hippolytus, the usual view today, though some scholars ascribe it to another Roman writer of the same circle. Books 2 and 3 are lost, and book 4 lacks its beginning.

Summary: The Archon's confession fulfilled the psalm; then the gospel had to go on to the Hebdomad.

Τοῦτο ἐστί, φησί, τὸ εἰρημένον· Τὴν ἁμαρτίαν μου ἐγνώρισα, καὶ τὴν ἀνομίαν μου ἐγὼ γινώσκω, ὑπὲρ ταύτης ἐξομολογήσομαι εἰς τὸν αἰῶνα. Ἐπεὶ οὖν κατήχητο μὲν ὁ μέγας ἄρχων, κατήχητο δὲ καὶ δεδίδακτο πᾶσα ἡ τῆς ὀγδοάδος κτίσις καὶ ἐγνωρίσθη τοῖς ἐπουρανίοις τὸ μυστήριον, ἔδει λοιπὸν καὶ ἐπὶ τὴν ἑβδομάδα ἐλθεῖν τὸ εὐαγγέλιον, ἵνα καὶ ὁ τῆς ἑβδομάδος παραπλησίως ἄρχων διδαχθῇ καὶ εὐαγγελισθήσεται.

English · Claude translation

This, he says, is what was said: “I have made my sin known, and I know my lawlessness; for this I will confess forever.” Since, then, the great Archon had been catechized, and the whole creation of the Ogdoad had been catechized and taught, and the mystery had been made known to the heavenly beings, it was necessary next for the gospel to come to the Hebdomad too, so that the Archon of the Hebdomad might likewise be taught and have the gospel preached to him.
