Authorship disputed: The work names no author. Book 1 was long printed among Origen's works as the Philosophumena; after books 4–10 were found in a manuscript from Mount Athos (published 1851), it was assigned to Hippolytus, the usual view today, though some scholars ascribe it to another Roman writer of the same circle. Books 2 and 3 are lost, and book 4 lacks its beginning.

Ἐπειδὰν τούτῳ τῷ χρόνῳ πεῖραν ἐγκρατείας δῷ, πρόσεισιν ἔγγιον τῇ διαίτῃ, καὶ καθαρωτέρως ἀπολούεται ἢ τὸ πρότερον· οὐδέπω δὲ σὺν αὐτοῖς τροφῆς μεταλαμβάνει. Μετὰ γὰρ τὸ δεῖξαι εἰ ἐγκρατεύεσθαι δύναται, ἐπὶ ἔτη ἄλλα δύο δοκιμάζεται τοῦ τοιούτου τὸ ἦθος, καὶ φανεὶς ἄξιος οὕτως εἰς αὐτοὺς κρίνεται.

When he has given proof of self-control during this time, he comes nearer to their way of life and washes with purer water than before; but he does not yet share food with them. For after showing whether he can practice self-control, his character is tested for two more years, and when he appears worthy he is thus judged to belong to them.
