Refutation of All Heresies 9.25.2

Authorship disputed: The work names no author. Book 1 was long printed among Origen's works as the Philosophumena; after books 4–10 were found in a manuscript from Mount Athos (published 1851), it was assigned to Hippolytus, the usual view today, though some scholars ascribe it to another Roman writer of the same circle. Books 2 and 3 are lost, and book 4 lacks its beginning.

Summary: They keep the Sabbath more strictly than all other Jews, not even moving a vessel.

They also avoid spitting into the middle or to the right side. They take care to abstain from work on the Sabbath more than all the Jews. For not only do they prepare their food a day beforehand so as not to kindle a fire, but they do not even move a vessel, nor relieve themselves; and some do not even leave their couch.
