Authorship disputed: The work names no author. Book 1 was long printed among Origen's works as the Philosophumena; after books 4–10 were found in a manuscript from Mount Athos (published 1851), it was assigned to Hippolytus, the usual view today, though some scholars ascribe it to another Roman writer of the same circle. Books 2 and 3 are lost, and book 4 lacks its beginning.

Summary: The Sadducees deny resurrection and the survival of the soul, saying one lives on only in one's children.

Ἀνάστασιν δὲ ἀρνοῦνται οὐ μόνον σαρκός, ἀλλὰ καὶ ψυχὴν μὴ διαμένειν νομίζουσι· [ταύτῃ δὲ] εἶναι μόνον τὸ ζῆν, καὶ τοῦτο δὲ εἶναι οὗ χάριν ἐγένετο ἄνθρωπος, ἐν δὲ τούτῳ πληροῦσθαι τὸν τῆς ἀναστάσεως λόγον, ἐν τῷ καταλείψαντας ἐπὶ γῆς τὰ τέκνα τελευτᾶν· μετὰ δὲ θάνατον μηδὲν ἐλπίζειν παθεῖν ἢ κακὸν ἢ ἀγαθόν· λύσιν γὰρ ἔσεσθαι καὶ ψυχῆς καὶ σώματος, καὶ εἰς τὸ μὴ εἶναι χωρεῖν τὸν ἄνθρωπον, καθʼ ὃ καὶ τὰ λοιπὰ ζῷα.

They deny the resurrection not only of the flesh, but they also think that the soul does not survive; [in this] alone is life, and this is what a human being came to be for; and in this the doctrine of the resurrection is fulfilled, in dying after leaving children on the earth. After death one must expect to suffer nothing, either evil or good; for there will be a dissolution of both soul and body, and a human being passes into non-existence, like the other animals.
