Καὶ ὅτι οὐκ ἔστιν ὁ ἐκφοβῶν καὶ δουλαγωγῶν ἡμᾶς, τοὺς ἐπὶ τὸν Ἰησοῦν πεπιστευκότας κατὰ πᾶσαν τὴν γῆν, φανερόν ἐστι. Κεφαλοτομούμενοι γὰρ καὶ σταυρούμενοι καὶ θηρίοις παραβαλλόμενοι καὶ δεσμοῖς καὶ πυρὶ καὶ πάσαις ταῖς ἄλλαις βασάνοις ὅτι οὐκ ἀφιστάμεθα τῆς ὁμολογίας, δῆλόν ἐστιν, ἀλλʼ, ὅσῳπερ ἂν τοιαῦτά τινα γίνηται, τοσούτῳ μᾶλλον ἄλλον ἄλλοι πλείονες πιστοὶ καὶ θεοσεβεῖς διὰ τοῦ ὀνόματος τοῦ Ἰησοῦ γίνονται. Ὁποῖον ἐὰν ἀμπέλου τις ἐκτέμῃ τὰ καρποφορήσαντα μέρη, εἰς τὸ ἀναβλαστῆσαι ἑτέρους κλάδους καὶ εὐθαλεῖς καὶ καρποφόρους ἀναδίδωσι, τὸν αὐτὸν τρόπον καὶ ἐφʼ ἡμῶν γίνεται· ἡ γὰρ φυτευθεῖσα ὑπὸ τοῦ θεοῦ ἄμπελος καὶ σωτῆρος Χριστοῦ ὁ λαὸς αὐτοῦ ἐστι.

English · Claude translation

“And it is plain that there is no one who terrifies and enslaves us who have believed in Jesus throughout the whole earth. For it is clear that, though we are beheaded and crucified and thrown to wild beasts and chains and fire and all other tortures, we do not fall away from our confession; but the more such things happen, the more do others in greater numbers become faithful and pious through the name of Jesus. Just as when one cuts away the parts of a vine that have borne fruit, it grows up to put forth other branches, flourishing and fruitful, the same thing happens with us; for the vine planted by God and by Christ the Savior is his people.
