Prescription against Heretics 17

This heresy does not accept certain Scriptures; and if it accepts some, it perverts them by additions and subtractions to fit the plan of its own system; and if it accepts them, it does not accept them whole; and if it does present them whole to some extent, it nevertheless twists them by devising different interpretations. An adulterated sense is as much opposed to the truth as a corrupting pen. Empty presumptions inevitably refuse to acknowledge the means by which they are refuted. They rely on what they have composed falsely and what they have seized from ambiguity. What will you gain, you who are most practiced in the Scriptures, when whatever you affirm is denied by the other side, and whatever you deny is affirmed? You will lose nothing, indeed, but your voice in the quarrel, and you will gain nothing but bile at the blasphemy.
