To Autolycus 3.15

Consider, then, whether those who learn such things can live promiscuously and be defiled by unlawful unions, or, most godless of all, eat human flesh, when we are forbidden even to watch the gladiatorial shows, so that we may not become partners and accomplices in murder. Nor may we watch the other spectacles, lest our eyes and ears be defiled by sharing in the songs sung there. For if one speaks of cannibalism, there the children of Thyestes and Tereus are eaten; and if of adultery, not only of men but also of gods, it is put on as tragedy among them, and they proclaim it melodiously, with honors and prizes. But far be it from Christians even to think of doing any such thing. Among them self-control is present, continence is practiced, monogamy is kept, chastity is guarded, injustice is cast out, sin is rooted out, righteousness is practiced, the law is their way of life, godliness is lived out, God is confessed, truth rules, grace preserves, peace shelters, the holy word guides, wisdom teaches, life governs, God reigns. We have much more to say about our way of life and about the ordinances of God, the Creator of all creation; but for now we think we have said enough to make you reflect, especially in the light of what you have read up to now, so that, as you have been a lover of learning up to now, you may go on being one.
