English · Claude translation

Medea, daughter of Aeetes, the Colchian, first devised the dyeing of hair. And the Noropes (a Paeonian people, now called Norici) worked bronze and first refined iron. Amycus, king of the Bebryces, first invented boxing thongs. In music, Olympus the Mysian cultivated the Lydian mode; and the so-called Troglodytes invented the sambuca, a musical instrument. They say that Satyrus the Phrygian invented the transverse pipe; likewise Agnis, also a Phrygian, the three-stringed lyre and the diatonic mode; Olympus, likewise a Phrygian, instrumental notes; Marsyas, of the same country as those just named, the Phrygian, Mixophrygian, and Mixolydian modes; and Thamyris the Thracian devised the Dorian. We have heard that the Persians first made the carriage, the couch, and the footstool, and that the Sidonians built the trireme. The Sicilians near Italy first invented the phorminx, not much inferior to the cithara, and devised castanets. They record that linen garments were invented in the time of … Semiramis, queen of the Egyptians; and Hellanicus says that Atossa, who reigned over the Persians, first composed letters.
