Authorship disputed: The work names no author. Book 1 was long printed among Origen's works as the Philosophumena; after books 4–10 were found in a manuscript from Mount Athos (published 1851), it was assigned to Hippolytus, the usual view today, though some scholars ascribe it to another Roman writer of the same circle. Books 2 and 3 are lost, and book 4 lacks its beginning.

Summary: Six emanations complete the first Ogdoad; beings are ranked as within the Pleroma, outside it, and outside Limit in the Deficiency.

Ἐκ τούτου τινὲς καὶ τῆς συζύγου προβολὰς γεγονέναι ἕξ, νοῦν καὶ ἀλήθειαν, λόγον καὶ ζωήν, ἄνθρωπον καὶ ἐκκλησίαν, καὶ εἶναι ταύτην τὴν ὀγδοάδα πρωτογενέτειραν· τάς τε ἐντὸς τοῦ ὅρου προβολὰς γεγενημένας πάλιν καλεῖσθαι ἐντὸς πληρώματος, δεύτερα δὲ τὰ ἐκτὸς πληρώματος, καὶ τρίτα τὰ ἐκτὸς τοῦ ὅρου, ὧν ἡ γέννησις τὸ ὑστέρημα ὑπάρχει.

From him and his consort, some say, six emanations came into being, Mind and Truth, Word and Life, Man and Church; and this is the first-begetting Ogdoad.
