Refutation of All Heresies 10.13.3

Authorship disputed: The work names no author. Book 1 was long printed among Origen's works as the Philosophumena; after books 4–10 were found in a manuscript from Mount Athos (published 1851), it was assigned to Hippolytus, the usual view today, though some scholars ascribe it to another Roman writer of the same circle. Books 2 and 3 are lost, and book 4 lacks its beginning.

Summary: The Demiurge came from the Deficiency; Christ descended from the Pleroma to save the spirit dwelling in the inner man.

English · Claude translation

And from the Aeon that was projected sixth in the Deficiency … came into being, and he says that this is the Demiurge, not wishing him to be the first God, but reviling him and the things made by him; and that Christ came down from within the Pleroma for the salvation of the spirit that had gone astray, which dwells in our inner man, which they say is saved on account of this indwelling spirit.

Notes

Translation notes

  • The first clause is garbled in the Greek (τὸ δὲ ἕκτου … γεγονέναι); a word such as “the Demiurge” or “Sophia” seems to be missing. “Inner man” echoes Eph 3:16.
