Refutation of All Heresies 5.16.12
Authorship disputed: The work names no author. Book 1 was long printed among Origen's works as the Philosophumena; after books 4–10 were found in a manuscript from Mount Athos (published 1851), it was assigned to Hippolytus, the usual view today, though some scholars ascribe it to another Roman writer of the same circle. Books 2 and 3 are lost, and book 4 lacks its beginning.
Summary: The Peratae identify the serpent with the constellation in heaven and with the Word of John's prologue.
English · Claude translation
After his image was made the bronze serpent in the wilderness which Moses set up. “Of him alone,” he says, “the likeness is always in heaven, seen in light. This,” he says, “is the great beginning of which it is written. Of this,” he says, “it was said: ‘In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God. He was in the beginning with God; all things came to be through him, and without him not one thing came to be. What came to be in him is life.’”
About this passage
Notes
Translation notes
- The likeness in heaven is the constellation of the Dragon (Draco). The quotation is John 1:1–4, punctuated so that “what came to be in him” begins the last clause.
Notes on the original text
- Digital text corrected (misread article in the digital text):
