Book 1 was long printed among Origen's works as the Philosophumena; after books 4–10 were found in a manuscript from Mount Athos (published 1851), it was assigned to Hippolytus, the usual view today, though some scholars ascribe it to another Roman writer of the same circle. Books 2 and 3 are lost, and book 4 lacks its beginning.

Ταῦτα δὲ σαφηνίσασαν αὐτῷ τὴν τετρακτὺν εἶπαι. Θέλω δή σοι καὶ αὐτὴν ἐπιδεῖξαι τὴν ἀλήθειαν· κατήγαγον γὰρ αὐτὴν ἐκ τῶν ὕπερθεν δωμάτων, ἵνα ἴδῃς αὐτὴν γυμνὴν καὶ καταμάθῃς αὐτῆς τὸ κάλλος, ἀλλὰ καὶ ἀκούσῃς αὐτῆς λαλούσης καὶ θαυμάσῃς τὸ φρόνημα αὐτῆς.

When she had made these things clear to him, the Tetrad said: “I wish to show you Truth herself; for I have brought her down from the dwellings above, so that you may see her naked and learn her beauty, and also hear her speaking and marvel at her wisdom.
