So Korah, Dathan, and Abiram, who tried to claim for themselves the right to sacrifice against Moses and Aaron the priest, paid the penalty at once for their attempt. The earth, its joints broken, opened into a deep chasm, and the gaping of the receding ground swallowed them up standing and alive. Nor did the anger of an indignant God strike only those who had been the authors; the others too, the two hundred and fifty sharers and companions of the same madness, who had banded together with them in their audacity, fire going out from the Lord consumed with swift vengeance; warning, of course, and showing that whatever the wicked attempt by human will to destroy God's ordinance is done against God. So too King Uzziah, when, carrying a censer and violently taking the sacrifice upon himself against the law of God, he would not obey and yield to Azariah the priest who opposed him, was confounded by divine indignation and spotted on his forehead with the blotches of leprosy, marked, since the Lord was offended, on that part of the body where those who deserve well of the Lord are sealed. And the sons of Aaron, who put strange fire on the altar which the Lord had not commanded, were at once destroyed in the sight of the avenging Lord.
