his enim et huiusmodi fabulis idem daemones ad execrationis horrorem imperitorum aures aduersus nos referserant. nec tamen mirum, quoniam fama, quae semper insparsis mendaciis alitur, ostensa ueritate consumitur.

For with these and similar fables the same demons had filled the ears of the ignorant against us, to make them shudder with abhorrence. Nor is this surprising, since rumour, which is always nourished by lies scattered abroad, is consumed when the truth is shown.
