So their power and authority has occupied the circuit of the whole world; so they have extended their empire beyond the paths of the sun and the bounds of Ocean itself, while they practise a religious valour in arms, while they fortify the city with the rites of sacred things, with chaste virgins, with many honours and titles of priests; while, besieged and captured except for the Capitol alone, they worship gods whom another would already have spurned as angry, and pass through the ranks of the Gauls, who marvel at the boldness of their superstition, unarmed with weapons but armed with the worship of religion; while, having taken the enemy's walls, with victory still raging, they venerate the conquered gods; while they seek out guest gods from everywhere and make them their own; while they build altars sometimes even to unknown divinities and to the shades of the dead.
