omitto uetera quae multa sunt, et de deorum natalibus, donis, muneribus neglego carmina poetarum, praedicta etiam de oraculis fata transilio, ne uobis antiquitas nimium fabulosa uideatur. intende templis ac delubris deorum, quibus Romana ciuitas et protegitur et ornatur: magis sunt augusta numinibus incolis, praesentibus, inquilinis quam cultu, insignibus et muneribus opulenta.

I pass over the old stories, which are many; I neglect the poets' songs about the births, gifts, and rewards of the gods; I skip over even the fates foretold by oracles, lest antiquity seem to you too full of fables. Look at the temples and shrines of the gods, by which the Roman city is both protected and adorned: they are more august by their divine inhabitants, present and indwelling, than rich in worship, ornaments, and gifts.
